DO YOU CONSIDER THAT THE THEORIES OF BEHAVIORISM, COGNITIVISM AND CONSTRUCTIVISM ARE OBSOLETE OR CAN WE CONTINUE PRACTICING THEM IN THE CLASSROOM NOWADAYS?
Brigith Hidalgo: From my perspective those learning theories are traditional, but we can mix some characteristics from them to continue practicing in class, since I consider that implemeting only one theory in class could be so conventional and boring, because if we implemented methods of behaviourism, it could be only through lecture, rote learning, multiple choice tests, drill and practice, so for me those things are obsolete. That's why, I say that we can mix and applied those learning theories in a different ways, for example using methods of cognitivism through visual tools and using methods of constructivism through collaborative group work, because nowadays students need new learning methods and innovative didactic strategies.
totally agree with you Brigitte, it is just a good idea to take the best of them to improve in our labour and to learn from historical pedagogical mistakes.
As far as I'm concerned, all those theories are useful as long as they can be used in a combined way, taking into account the positive aspects of every single one of them. Conversely, if someone appplied just one theory, it would bring about an uninteresting class; putting aside the innovation and a suitable dynamic. Therefore, to implement a lesson with a lecture, establishing teamwork to build new knowledge, and using mind maps so as to throw new light on understanding the different concepts could be appropriate.
totally agree Juan Carlos, our labor needs continuous learning to appropiate new ways and alternatives for teaching and learning, there are many theories but not so much practice in the real life, these theories are not bad but also not the best at all.
By Leidy Cruz In my point of view, I think that those theories are important in the development of the learning process of students, however, those theories have some characteristics that we can use in our classes, but not the whole class; this can become in a traditional class. These theories can work among them, in other words, to use specific characteristics of each one of the theories at the same time, with the help of different resources and materials. Also, keeping in mind, as teachers, we can investigate and explore new theories and other aspects that we can implement in our classes, in order that the learning and the teaching processes improve through the time.
totally agree with you, it is a good idea to recognize the best and to improve mistakes, but as you said we can explore to see what is the best way to be a good teacher. also to have a successful process with students.
I believe that these theories provided a very important basis when putting pedagogy into practice. Some are not very successful than others, but all build possible visions that teachers can impart at the time of teaching.
Today, they are still important, but I believe that education has also progressed so that the student is freer at the time of learning, breaking with traditional methodologies.
As a future teacher, I place more importance on knowing that each student is a different world and that each one has different processes. Perhaps we can apply these methodologies, but we must know how they can be adapted to reality, which is constantly changing.
thank you very much guys I really appreciate that you follow the discussion, not just for getting a score, just to check others perspective and to complement with yours to refelct about it and improve in your process.
In my eyes, all these three theories can continue working in the educational system because they explain some behaviors that people have in different stages or in different situations. Perhaps, these theories behavorism, cognitivism and constructivism are not completely accurate but if teachers analyse the worthwhile information for education and go beyond with studies, the education will improve though the time. As Vigotsky said: "what a child do in cooperation today, he can do alone tomorrow", I consider the same would happen with education, if we as teachers work cooperatively now, the education will change and be better. Geraldine Barbosa
From my viewpoint, I consider that these theories are useful for all of us in an educational field, not only to grasp the different ways that our pupils learn, but also because these perspectives allow teachers to analyze the external and internal factors that affect or contribute students' processes. Also, it is worth to highlight that teachers do not have to tie to just one theory due to that all of them work hand-in-hand to promote several learning environments for our students. Furthermore, it is a big contribution for reinforcing and enhancing our teaching performances, and creating new opportunities for learners to exchange, communicate, and ameliorate their learning .
In my opinion each of these theories has something useful that we as teachers can apply in the classroom, so I would say that the mixture of these three theories leads to a positive teaching and learning environment. Behaviorism is important to maintain discipline, cognitivism is relevant because teachers must teach from the easiest to the hardest and finally constructivism let us know that we learn from each other and that cooperative work is essential to achieve great goals.
We are on the same page Sebastian. These theories influcence in a positive way in the classroom by providing a significant teaching and learning environment.
I think that these theories are really indispensable when learning, because each one of them fulfills a crucial role allowing learners to get a meaningful knowledge. The behaviorism provides an environment where we can control the behavior into the classroom by establishing actions for positive or negative attitudes. The cognitivism is followed by the previous one, involving the learning to internal processes that students are getting through the classes. Teachers are responsible in assisting students to organize info in an optimal way easily. Finally, the term of constructivism supports pupils to learn by themselves. It offers them enough tools to achieve it by constructing personal beliefs in order to have a significant interaction in the classroom through a knowledge given. It is important to mention that the term “knowledge” influences in these theories improving skills through own experiences in the educational field.
From my point of view, I think that the three theories are very complete, and they offer us as future teachers, a great variety of activities to apply through these in order to make our classes not so monotonous or boring. I think that we can apply and combine them today with everything that is in trend. I believe that we can apply and combine them today with everything that is in tendency. As we can see, one of them provides us with the stimulus and response, the next is the process that the student takes to process the information received and understand it, and finally the third allows us to see how the student can build his own knowledge through his experiences in a real context.
I consider that these theories are not obsolete because despite the emergence of new learning theories, these in one way or another have roots of the old theories, which is why I think that the theories of behaviorism, constructivism and cognitivism are important today in the classrooms, even in the future we as future teachers can put these theories into practice and experiment, because I consider that they have been relevant and good in our learning process since they have been one of the most effective theories in terms of problems of learning. Finally, although they were developed in different contexts and had their heyday, they are present in the past and present educational system.
Juan Pablo Morales Sandoval. It seems to me that all these theories are necessary when teaching. Firstly, behaviorism is important to have a good classroom management since this theory allows students to identify what they have to do and what they don't. Secondly, regarding cognitivism, students have the chance to relate something they already know to something new, which can help them to understand in a better and easy way. Last but not least, constructivism. This theory makes students be more autonomous in their learning process. In this one, students relate what they are learning to their own experiences and context. Here the teacher performs a guide role that helps students grow as academically as personally. To wrap up, it's worth highlighting that these all theories are meaningful in the learning process.
Yury Tatiana Monsalve Gaviria I consider them to be traditional theories but not obsolete. Because they are traditional theories, they are full of classroom experiences and teachings. These can be articulated with each other to generate more dynamism in the classrooms and the teaching processes that they entail. Even if we look a little more and taking into account that they have been put into practice for a long time and have been functional, but that as education also requires updates in its structure, then we can combine them with the theories generated in modernity, with the new concepts to promote a different and fresh dynamic.
In my opinion, I reckon that these theories are not obsolete because those bring us different methods which we can use in our classes since those are useful and teach us how can we teach taken into account that everyone don't learn in the same way so we having this knowledge can teach in a better way to everybody.
I consider all you can use to make your class different will be totally valid. I do not think these theories are obsolet, I think there are ways you can take advantage of this. You can mix the teories make something differen this will be pretty nice interact every day with one of the theories you can feel free to use all of them and not just one.
I consider that the three theories are fundamental in the development of learning. Each one meets some important criteria and when unifying them could be a support in the teaching method. If, when structuring the theory of behavior, when considering a little the role of the teacher to transmit knowledge to the student, the theory of cognitivism when the teacher also fulfills the role of observer and the students do the task of researchers and with the theory of socio-constructivism integrating co-collaboration in the classroom between students and teachers. I believe that by doing this combination of theories it is possible to generate an efficient learning strategy in education.
What Is Assessment? DEFINITIONS Assessment involves the use of empirical data on student learning to refine programs and improve student learning. (Assessing Academic Programs in Higher Education by Allen 2004) Assessment is the process of gathering and discussing information from multiple and diverse sources in order to develop a deep understanding of what students know, understand, and can do with their knowledge as a result of their educational experiences; the process culminates when assessment results are used to improve subsequent learning. (Learner-Centered Assessment on College Campuses: shifting the focus from teaching to learning by Huba and Freed 2000) Assessment is the systematic basis for making inferences about the learning and development of students. It is the process of defining, selecting, designing, collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and using information to increase students' learning and development.
